Over many years our staff has been involved in settling children happily into the preschool environment. This process also requires the undivided support of parents. Working together will ensure a smooth start to your child’s formal education.

Hints For Starting Preschool

Some of the following ideas may help your child to settle into preschool:
  • Talk to them about what they will do at preschool. For example - painting, water play, block play, lunchtime, singing, stories etc. Talk about the teachers who will take care of them. Ensure that they are aware that if they need anything that they can ask a teacher, who will help them. Try to use the staff's names so the children will become used to them.
  • For those of you who have older children who have attended preschool, encourage them to talk about the fun things that they did or show your preschooler photos and craft items you may have kept.
  • Arrive on time to drop off and pick up your child.
  • If possible, organise for a consistent person to pick up your child for the first few weeks to avoid surprises.
  • Remember all of your child’s personal items.

  • Let the staff know if your child has been upset, tired, and sick, had a busy day previously or if there has been a family drama.
  • Avoid speaking about your child in their presence.
  • When it is time to leave, always say goodbye and tell the child when you are going to return. It is important that you leave as promptly as you can. By leaving this way you are letting your child know that preschool has your stamp of approval. Long goodbyes are distressing for the child, parent/carer and other children.
  • Be prepared to put your trust in the staff’s judgement of the situation. If your child is not coping, staff will contact you. Often staff contact parents if the child is coping, simply to reassure you
